This aftermarket front wheel left-side collar is designed for the SYM Jet X 125I 125cc scooter, fitting 2021-2022 production models with OEM reference 44312-ZBC-000. The wheel collar is a precision-machined spacer component that may seem simple, but it plays a critical role in wheel alignment, bearing life, and overall riding safety.

The collar positions the front wheel assembly laterally on the axle, maintaining correct alignment between the brake disc, speedometer drive unit, and fork leg sliders. In the Jet X 125I front wheel architecture, the axle passes through the right fork leg, the right wheel bearing, the wheel hub, the speedometer drive gear, the left wheel bearing, and finally the left fork leg. The collar sits between the left bearing inner race and the left fork leg, establishing the wheel’s lateral position and preventing the bearing inner race from contacting the fork leg directly. Without this precisely dimensioned spacer, the wheel would shift laterally under braking and cornering loads, causing erratic handling, accelerated bearing wear, and potential brake disc misalignment.

Manufactured from aluminum alloy 6061-T6, the collar provides an excellent combination of strength, light weight, and corrosion resistance. The 6061 alloy, containing magnesium and silicon as primary alloying elements, achieves a tensile strength of 290 MPa and yield strength of 240 MPa in the T6 temper (solution heat treated and artificially aged). This strength is more than adequate for the axial loads of 2-3 kN encountered during hard braking, while the low density (2.7 g/cm³) keeps unsprung weight minimal for responsive suspension action. The hard-anodized surface treatment, applied to a thickness of 25μm (Type III, MIL-A-8625), creates a ceramic aluminum oxide layer with a hardness of 400-500 HV. This hard surface prevents galling when in contact with the steel axle and bearing inner race, while the anodizing process also provides excellent corrosion resistance in the salt-spray environment of road riding.

The collar’s inner bore is honed to H7 tolerance (12.000mm to 12.018mm for a 12mm axle), ensuring smooth axle fitment without excessive clearance that could cause knocking or fretting wear. The outer diameter maintains g6 tolerance (20.000mm to 20.013mm for a 20mm bearing bore), providing a precision slip fit with the bearing inner race that maintains concentricity within 0.02mm. The axial length is held within ±0.05mm, as even small length variations can affect wheel alignment and bearing preload. The weight of approximately 45g represents a careful balance between structural adequacy and minimization of unsprung mass.

Replacement of the wheel collar is necessary when: the bearing seat shows scoring, galling, or discoloration from overheating; the anodized surface is worn through to bare metal, exposing the aluminum to galvanic corrosion when in contact with dissimilar metals; the dimensions have changed due to wear or impact damage (measure with a micrometer); or after any front-end collision where the wheel or fork legs may have been stressed. Always inspect the companion components—wheel bearings, axle, brake disc carrier, and speedometer drive unit—for concurrent wear or damage before installing a new collar. A worn bearing race can destroy a new collar within weeks through fretting corrosion, while a bent axle will cause persistent alignment problems regardless of collar condition.

During installation, clean all mating surfaces thoroughly and apply a thin film of waterproof grease to prevent corrosion bonding. Torque the axle nut to the OEM specification (typically 40-50 Nm) and verify that the wheel spins freely without binding or lateral play. Check brake disc runout with a dial indicator—excessive runout indicates wheel misalignment that may be caused by an incorrectly seated collar or damaged bearing.
